Same Wines, New Look!

By Anthony Lane Design

Like Madonna in the 90’s, a wise marketing man told me retail wines should undergo a refresh every 7 years or so. In Madonna’s case every 7 days.

Armed with this advice we tasked Anthony Lane Design to conceptualize new illustrations for our Discovery labels. Other subtle changes included adding some colour (previously black and white) along with changes to the typography.

Each label in the Discovery series tells a story about the farm.

FOUNTAIN of YOUTH (Sauvignon Blanc) is the story of Antonie finding a fresh water spring on the foothills of the Groenlandberg which he piped many miles to his home.

The railway carved into Sir Lowry’s Pass traversing through Oak Valley tells the story of STONE and STEEL (Riesling).

Our cool climate is best characterised by cloud cover during the growing season, this is the story of BENEATH the CLOUDS (Chardonnay).

Our mountain vineyard perched high on the Groenlandberg sits isolated and alone in the SOUNDS of SILENCE (Pinot Noir).

In 1898 Antonie planted the first apple tree in Elgin, now the largest apple growing region in the country proving that remarkable achievements require a LEAP of FAITH (Merlot).

Hidden in each label is a Discovery element, a woman’s face concealed in the natural landscape. This is Antonie’s daughter Oakleine, named after the farm and his love of oak trees, born in the original homestead, she died aged 103.

After Antonie bought Oak Valley, his friends were not impressed, worried he bought a worthless piece of sourveld. Yet Oakleine recalls her father saying ‘nature never allows a vacuum.’

And so here she is, watching over us while we continue his legacy of quality and excellence for five generations and counting!
