Almost exactly 10 years ago I started working on the farm. Fresh off an Australian Masters in Wine Business, hopped up on theory with a millennial know-it-all swagger.

The old man immediately put me in charge of the wine business.
Week one involved a deep dive into the vineyard, marketing and financials.

The following week, I remember marching down the corridor, knocking on his door, politely asking, ‘What the hell are we doing here?’Clearly agitated he replied, ‘I like drinking my wine!’

Fair enough, a solid reason. To his credit, he gave me a lot of rope, mainly to make mistakes, which came in abundance.
At the time we were producing too many wines, Semillon, Rose, White Blend, Cabernet Franc, Red Blend, Shiraz along with a second label.

We took a moment to ask ourselves a simple question, what can we produce that has the potential to be Top 10?
The answer, to focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and damn the rest!

It took us 5 or 6 years to narrow the portfolio.Once we got there, we evolved our focus further by deconstructing our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir into its component parts – the clones. Partly inspired by Kershaw and his clonal series.

We called this project Tabula Rasa meaning ‘clean slate.’

This geeky mission would assess the clonal differences of our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir picked from different sites on Oak Valley. In the case of our Pinot, these are the French Dijon clones, 114, 115, 667 and 777, typically blended together and rarely bottled alone.

So here we are. Platter 2022 with 5x 5-star wines, one Chardonnay and four Pinot’s. Proud as punch of our small team.

Into the weekend we go with plans afoot to celebrate furiously!

Take care,

* Our 5-star 2018 Tabula Rasa Pinot’s are currently available to our Wine Club Members only. For the rest, Carissa is taking orders on allocation and the wines will be sent when they are released next year.
